Goody Toe Shoes

“Goody Toe Shoes” is a one act stage play about three friends hanging out in a cabin in the woods together on a guys trip. Things go sideways as one of the guys mixes up his packing and brings the wrong brownie…

The excerpts from the script show a variety of writing scenarios including outlining the setting and stage directions, mystery and confusion through dialogue, and emotional output and connection between characters.

This play will be produced as part of the Director’s Festival by the TRU Theatre department at the campus theatre in late March and early April 2025.

Excerpts From The Script:

Excerpt #1

Act I

Scene 1

SETTING:      Living room in a cozy cabin. A large couch and coffee table sit in the middle of the stage in the foreground. A counter with snacks sits in the background.

Lucas and Mason sit on the floor across from each other. Thomas is on the couch watching them play. They use the coffee table as their blackjack table. Two plates with crumbs are present in front of Lucas and Thomas.

LUCAS: I don’t feel so good.

MASON: You’re fine, now you gonna hit or stand?

LUCAS: Hit, I guess.

Mason deals a card.

MASON: Nineteen.

LUCAS: Stand.

         Mason reveals his second card.

MASON: Blackjack!

Lucas sighs and reaches for his Oreo’s which are being used as blackjack chips.

MASON: Pay up Lukey. Gonna have to grab your second pack pretty soon.

LUCAS: Maybe let me be the dealer for more than one hand and I won’t have to.

MASON: You’re on a cold streak what’s going on? Pretty embarrassing for someone who knows how to count cards.

LUCAS: I’m still learning, but I told you five games ago I gotta get back to studying.

Lucas grabs his textbook and starts reading.

Excerpt #2

THOMAS: What’s up Luke- (realizes) Woah, you good brother? You look like shit.

LUCAS: There are more planes in the ocean than submarines in the sky.

MASON: What’s up with him?

Thomas shifts his attention to Mason.

THOMAS: I don’t know.

MASON: Did he get poisoned or something?

THOMAS: I have no idea. I’ve never seen him like this before.

LUCAS: Where do thoughts go when you forget them?

Thomas shifts his attention back to Lucas.

THOMAS: What did you say Lukey?

LUCAS: Where do (pause) I don’t remember.

Mason sneaks off to the kitchen, picks up a fork and tries some of the brownie.

         Mason’s expression shifts to realization.

THOMAS: What’s going on buddy? What’s wrong-

LUCAS: We live on a floating rock in the middle of (pause) space.

THOMAS: Yeah that is pretty crazy when you think about it.

MASON: (muttering to himself) Shit I knew I should’ve double checked.

Mason sneaks back to the living room.

LUCAS: Isn’t that wild?

THOMAS: I mean yeah, I guess it is. Why are you talking like that Lukey? You sure you’re okay?

LUCAS: (sarcastically) I’m gonna die one day.

Lucas pauses. LUCAS: (emotionally) I’m gonna die one day.

Excerpt #3

THOMAS: There’s still time to change.

MASON: I don’t know.

THOMAS: What do you mean?

MASON: Sometimes I feel like I’m too far gone.

THOMAS: But you’re not. I wouldn’t have encouraged you to go if I didn’t think he could help.

MASON: I don’t need his help.

THOMAS: You’re not getting it?

MASON: Getting what?

THOMAS: I want to help you, but I can’t… but I care about you enough to try to find someone who can.

MASON: (sighs) Do you still see him?

THOMAS: No not anymore.

MASON: Why?

THOMAS: He gave me all the resources I needed to pick myself back up.

MASON: Like what?

THOMAS: Well he helped me find ways to deal with everything. I wasn’t eating. Could barely bring myself out of bed. Was having some pretty fucked up thoughts about hurting myself. It wasn’t good. I don’t know what caused it. Like I can’t pinpoint where it started, just a slow progression of watching myself fall deeper and darker without knowing how to stop it, or even slow it down.

MASON: Damn man I had no idea.

THOMAS: I felt like I did a pretty good job at hiding it.

MASON: You did.

THOMAS: It took a long time, but I slowly started to reconnect with my best friends again.

MASON: So that’s why you disappeared for a while. I’m proud of you man.
